Legendary Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor passed away on July 26 (local time). He was 56 years old.
Sinéad’s family told RTÉ, Ireland’s public broadcaster, “It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” and requested privacy for Sinéad’s passing.
Sinéad was blessed with four children during her lifetime, but tragically lost her beloved son Shane (17) in January 2022. At the time, Sinéad wrote on social media, “My beautiful son, Nevim Nesta Ali Shane O’Connor, decided today to put an end to his struggle on earth. He was the light of my life and is now with God. May he rest in peace. And may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Rest in peace,” she wrote, expressing her love and sadness for Shane, who took his own life.
In June 2022, five months after Shane passed away, Sinéad canceled all of her gigs in order to prioritize her “health and happiness. Her management team stated, “Due to the grief experienced since the loss of her beloved son Shane earlier this year, Sinéad O’Connor respectfully announces that she will not be performing in 2022.
Sinéad, whose Prince cover song “(Nothing Compares 2 U)” was a worldwide hit, is known to have struggled with mental health issues over the years: in 2015, she made a cryptic post about an overdose, and the following year she went missing and worried her fans. Sinéad’s last public appearance was at The RTÉ Choice Music Prize, a music ceremony held in March of this year.
