The final round of the AIG Women’s Open, the final women’s golf major, was played on July 7 at Muirfield Links (par 71) in Gullane, northern England, and the 2019 tournament champion, Hinako Shibuno (23), who came from second place, five shots off the lead, did not win for the second time in three years.

Ashleigh Buhai (South Africa) won the tournament.

Shibuno shot a 71 and finished in third place at 9 under par. Ashleigh Buhai (South Africa), who was tied at 10 under par, won a playoff with In Gee Chun (Korea) on the fourth hole.

Shibuno shot a 65 in the first round to lead the field at 6-under. In the second round, he dropped two scores and dropped to 7th place at 4 under par. In the third round, he shot a 66 with six birdies and one bogey to move up to second place at 9-under par. Expectations were high for Shibuno to become the first Japanese player, male or female, to win a major championship in two years.

Shibuno, a native of Okayama Prefecture, passed her second professional test in 2006, and at the age of 20, she made her first attempt at a major, winning the AIG Women’s Open in August 2007, her first major victory in 42 years since Hisako Higuchi won the U.S. Women’s Professional Championship in 1977. Subsequently, Yuka Sasao won the U.S. Women’s Open in 2009 for the Japanese, and Hideki Matsuyama won the Masters Tournament in 2009 for the men.

Shibuno has been a full-fledged member of the U.S. Tour since this season. He finished fourth in the first major championship, the Chevron Championship, but abandoned or failed to qualify in the following three rounds.
