Popular singer Lizzo has lost over 170,000 followers on Instagram after being accused of sexual harassment. Many fans on social media have expressed disbelief and confusion, trying to reconcile the accusations against her with her reputation for promoting body positivity and acceptance on the other hand.
It all started when three of Lizzo’s former dancers filed a lawsuit against Lizzo, accusing her of body shaming and sexual harassment.
In the lawsuit, Lizzo allegedly forced one dancer to touch the performer’s breasts during a night out at a nude club in Amsterdam, and that he had been warned about the dancer’s weight.
Lizzo later issued a statement saying, “Normally I choose not to respond to false allegations, but these allegations are unbelievable and so outrageous,” “I know what it feels like to be subjected to body shaming on a daily basis, and criticizing employees because of their weight I would never criticize or fire an employee because of their weight,” she said, flatly denying the dancers’ accusations.
Still, for many fans, the allegations that Lizzo may have acted in a manner completely opposite to the “body positivity” he has espoused seemed to come as a strong shock.
According to Insider, experts say that the “unique relationship” Lizzo has built with her fans could also be her undoing. Through it all, she built an image of likability and credibility.
A college dropout, Lizzo lost his job and apartment in 2009 and lived out of his car. She then spent several years as a local band on the Minneapolis circuit before releasing two solo studio albums, 2013’s “Lizzobangers” and 2015’s “Big Grrrl Small World,” neither of which garnered much attention The band has been a major force in the music industry for the past few years.
Thanks to the power of TikTok, her 2017 single “Truth Hurts” went viral and reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making 2019 her breakout year. Since then, the rest of her back catalog has skyrocketed in popularity.
Lizzo has since become one of the biggest celebrities today, as well as one of the more relatable. She has a large social media presence, which has strengthened the connection between her and her fans.
Last year, when Lizzo responded to a video of a girl dancing to her music with words of encouragement, she was praised for helping to boost the confidence of women of all ages. And when one writer asked to borrow Lizzo’s Emmy-winning dress on TikTok, Lizzo watched her video and sent it to him, further increasing her fans’ appreciation for her act of kindness.
