The 1975, led by Matty Healy, performed at Good Vibes Festival 2023, one of the country’s largest music festivals, in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur this July.

On that occasion, they gave a speech condemning Malaysia’s policies, kissed bandmate Ross MacDonald, and were forced to leave the stage.

The Malaysian Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs took this situation very seriously and announced the cancellation of the Good Vibes Festival, which was scheduled for three days, citing “Matty’s controversial actions and statements. The weekend lineup was scheduled to include popular artists such as Daniel Caesar, The Strokes, The Kid Laroye, and Ty Dollar Sign.

According to Varity magazine, David Matthews, attorney for Future Sound Asia, organizers of the Good Vibes Festival, issued a letter citing the band’s breach of contract. The organizers are seeking compensation from The 1975 for the agency’s losses due to the cancellation of the event, totaling $2.7 million.

They entered into a binding contract with Future Sound Asia regarding their appearance, and Future Sound Asia, among others, stands in the position of having breached this contractual obligation.” Furthermore, Mr. Healy’s representatives had provided written assurances prior to the show that Mr. Healy and The 1975 would “abide by all local guidelines and regulations” during their live performance in Malaysia. Unfortunately, that commitment was ignored.

David Matthews added, “(The 1975’s) actions affected local artists and small businesses that relied on the festival for their livelihood and creative opportunities.
