A certain riddle app is showing signs of popularity.
BeReal, a social networking app currently ranked No. 2 on Apple’s free apps list, sends notifications to all users at certain times of the day instructing them to “take a front and back photo at that moment. The notification times are not random, but how they are chosen is a “trade secret,” according to the company.

It allows users to post one photo a day, taken at a set time, and to view photos posted by their friends.
Perhaps the inconvenience of not being able to decide when to take a photo is the reason for the app’s popularity, but the feeds are lined with “everyday scenes” not usually seen on social networking sites, such as selfies taken at home, workouts at the gym, and photos of feet on the dinner table. There are two types of feeds: “Discover,” which can be viewed by anyone, and “My Friends,” which is limited to friends only. The “My Memories” feature allows users to check their own past photos posted on BeReal.
In response to the growing popularity of BeReal, TikTok and Instagram are also beginning to include similar features in their apps.
According to technology media outlet The Verge, Tiktok launched “TikTok Now,” a similar feature, in September, and Instagram launched “Dual,” which allows users to take photos with both front and back cameras, in July.
BeReal” has been downloaded 56 million times in 2022 alone, and appears to have been the most downloaded app in August. The number of daily active users has already reached more than 10 million.
Unlike its competitors, BeReal is considering introducing paid features instead of advertisements.
