Brandon Flowers, frontman of the American rock band The Killers, was booed during a concert after he introduced a Russian fan by a certain name.

This man is Russian. Is it okay to be Russian?

The Killers, who are currently on their “Imploding the Mirage Tour” in support of their sixth and seventh albums, held a concert at the Black Sea Arena in Georgia on August 15. At the concert, the band’s long-standing tradition of having a fan come on stage to play the drums was performed.

Brandon said of the man who came on stage that day, “I don’t know about the etiquette of the land, but this man is Russian. Do you think it’s okay for him to be Russian?” The audience reacted negatively when he said, “I don’t know about the etiquette of this land, but this man is Russian. Amid boos, Brandon said, “You don’t know if he’s your brother? He’s not your brother? Are you going to divide us at the border? So you guys are splitting up? So you’re saying I’m not a brother? We’re from the U.S. and we’re not brothers?” When he asked the question, more boos erupted from the audience.

Not only did the audience express their anger, but many fans reportedly left the venue.

Georgia gained independence from the Soviet Union (now the Russian Federation) in 1991. However, it was invaded by Russia in 2008, and the two countries have been at odds over the years.

The Killers later issued an apology to the Georgian fans who expressed their displeasure, saying through social networking sites that they “did not mean to offend anyone.

The Killers’ audience and all of their fans are aware that their comments suggesting that they are brothers and sisters were misinterpreted. We did not mean to offend anyone. We apologize.”
