According to Variety magazine on September 7, Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios, which is producing the Netflix version of “ONE PIECE” with Eiichiro Oda and Shueisha, announced, “The script is already ready. The script is complete, and as long as production can begin, “we can deliver (the next season) within a year,” Adelstein even revealed the progress.
The reason he says “as long as we can get production started” is that Hollywood is still in the midst of a double strike by the Actors and Writers Guild, which must be resolved before they can move forward. Tomorrow Studios President Becky Clements also anticipates the earlier-than-expected arrival of Season 2, saying, “Realistically, if production moves forward very quickly, we could be ready to deliver in as early as a year, maybe a year to a year and a half.
The Netflix version of “One Piece” was viewed 18.5 million times in the first four days of Season 1, making it the number one English-language TV series, but as yet Netflix has made no official announcement regarding Season 2.
As you know, Netflix didn’t reveal [the idea of a Season 2] until after Season 1 was released,” Clements said, “but we were hoping that with Netflix’s support, this show would be number one, and their research and algorithms But we were hoping that Netflix’s support would make this film number one, and we felt that their research and algorithms would see its potential. But after the distribution started, they called us and told us it was a bigger hit than they had expected,” he said, expressing his confidence before the release of the film and pleased with the response that exceeded it.
Tomorrow Studios must be delighted with the success of “ONE PIECE” since they had experienced the hardship of the cancellation of Netflix’s live-action version of “Cowboy Bebop” without success. The executives seem to have even higher expectations for “ONE PIECE” in the future.
Adelstein emphasizes the importance of expanding the fan base, saying, “What we need to do now is to broaden the audience base,” and “It is really important to bring in people who are not fans of the original work, people who don’t know about it. The next step in proving that “One Piece” deserves a Season 2 production seems to be to bring in viewers who were originally unfamiliar with “One Piece” and would not have watched the current production right away.
The live-action drama version of “ONE PIECE” is currently available on Netflix.
