I’m sorry,” he said emphatically over the radio.

Hamilton, who has won a record seven F1 world titles, struggled mightily in qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Despite running throughout the session and making multiple attempts, he was unable to improve on his times.

On his final attempt, he managed to move up to 15th, but Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), who was attacking behind him, set a better time than Hamilton. This left Hamilton in 16th position and unable to advance to Q2.

This was the first time since the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2017 that Hamilton was eliminated from Q1. However, this time it was because he was unable to set a time due to a crash, and to be eliminated from Q1 after putting up a strong fight was a big shock.

When Hamilton was eliminated from Q1, he said over the radio, “I’m sorry,” without much effort.

Hiroki Tsunoda of Alphatauri was also unable to set a time due to machine trouble, and was also eliminated from Q1.
