The world’s best professional athletes receive huge salaries in exchange for their abilities, humanity, and social skills. In particular, the NBA is the norm in sports entertainment, and the average annual salary of players is set high due to the size of the business and its advertising nature.
Salaries and fight money for on-field activities are limited.
However, top athletes at the peak of their careers receive salaries that are comparable to those of NBA players. Of course, we should not forget not only the athletes who are active on the pitch and court, but also the stars who are primarily active on the circuit and in the ring.
Bleacher Report has focused on some of the world’s top players, ranking their salaries this season. This ranking is limited to salary and fight money for on-field activities and does not take into account endorsement deals or off-court business income.
The highest paid NBA player in the ranking was Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors). The player signed a new four-year, $215 million ($29.8 billion) contract in the offseason of 2021 and will receive $48.1 million ($6.7 billion) for the 2022-23 season.
But even Curry, the NBA’s top salary recipient, is ranked 8th, and there is still more up there in the world of sports.
At the top of this salary ranking is Kylian Ebapee, who is currently representing France in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Currently playing for Paris Saint-Germain, the player’s annual salary is a staggering $110 million (about 15 billion yen).
This is 8.3 billion yen more than Curry, making him the only athlete in the ranking to exceed nine figures (in dollars). In addition, Ebapee’s colleagues Lionel Messi and Neymar are ranked third and seventh, respectively, with $65 million (approximately ¥9 billion) and $55 million (¥7.6 billion).
In terms of the number of fights, Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez, who has won four world championships, dominates the list. Canelo, who has a lifetime record of 58-2-2, fought Dimitry Bivol and Gennady Golovkin in May and September of this year, respectively, and earned $85 million (approximately 11.8 billion yen) in fight money from just two fights.
Other NFL players Matthew Stafford and Russell Wilson and Lewis Hamilton of F1 Mercedes rank higher than Curry; Russell Westbrook and LeBron James (both Los Angeles Lakers), considered the NBA’s top paid players, cannot even be named! The results may give you an idea of how mature the global sports industry is.
