The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard still continues. A film company executive denied Amber’s claim.
Amber’s scenes in the film were reduced because “there was no chemistry between her and Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman.”
The defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard is still ongoing. It was sparked by an editorial article Amber published in a newspaper in which she wrote, “I experienced domestic violence,” and in this trial Amber claims that Johnny conducted a campaign of defamation against her. She appeared in the DC movie “Aquaman” after her divorce, playing Mera, the girlfriend of the main character Aquaman. She has already finished filming and is continuing the same role in the sequel “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (hereafter referred to as “the second film”), which is scheduled to be released next year. However, the number of scenes in the second film has been drastically reduced. Amber’s side said, “It was because of the negative press and attacks I received online after Johnny’s team accused my claim that I had been subjected to domestic violence as a ‘hoax. This caused the film company to distance themselves from me.”
You may recall that Johnny dropped out of the “Fantastic Beasts” film series in November 2020. This was the result of Johnny losing a court case in which he sued a British tabloid newspaper and the film company asked him to drop the film after the court concluded that it was “generally true” that he had engaged in domestic violence. Johnny’s fans were outraged by this and collected signatures online, saying “Amber should also be removed from the second “Aquaman” movie. Amber’s side sees this as another thing that Johnny’s side instigated.
But it was revealed that the film company denied Amber’s side of the argument in court. Walter Hamada, president of DC Films, which produces the “Aquaman” series, testified in a video this week. According to Hamada, Amber’s scenes were reduced because “there was no chemistry between her and Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman.” At the end of the first filming, “concerns were voiced about Amber’s lack of natural chemistry with Momoa,” he said.
According to a report in People magazine, their lack of chemistry was so bad that there was even a suggestion among the production team to change the cast for the role of Mera. According to Hamada, “The chemistry was not good. It happens often in movies. He said that they made it look like there was chemistry through the power of acting, editing, and music. In other words, Johnny had nothing to do with it, and there was nothing to be gained by adding more scenes between Momoa and Amber, who had no chemistry, so Amber’s role was reduced as a result.
Incidentally, in July of this year, Peter Safran, the producer of the second film, commented that he would not react to fan pressure (for Johnny) and that Amber would play the role if director James Wan and Jason Momoa thought she should. It is clear that if we change the cast, it would look like we were bowing to fan pressure. It seems that they came to the conclusion to reduce Amber’s scenes to avoid that and at the same time deal with the lack of chemistry.
