On June 20, Yoon Sang-hyun, a member of the National Assembly from the ruling party “People’s Power,” posted on his SNS (social networking site), “The National Assembly must not avoid amending the law (allowing alternative military service) for any reason and choose the greater national interest. Otherwise, the golden age of K-pop may disappear.

The their agency announced that it would wait for the immediate conclusion of the Diet, but without any news.

Yun asserted, “On the surface, (BTS) emphasized that they were tired and needed rest, but the main reason is the military service issue of member JIN, who has to enlist by the end of the year.

He also pointed out that “their agency announced that they would wait for the Diet’s immediate conclusion on the issue of their members’ military service, but there has been no news.” He emphasized that BTS’s announcement of their hiatus caused the stock price of their entertainment agency HYBE to plummet and its market capitalization to decrease by 2 trillion won.

He then pointed out, “To that extent, BTS’s suspension has a very large impact on the Korean economy as well as the K-pop market. He urged the National Assembly to respond.

In June 2021, Yun, then a member of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee, co-submitted to the National Assembly a bill to amend the Military Service Act to allow popular culture artists who have made significant contributions to the national interest to serve in lieu as art and sports personnel.

Under the current law, the system for arts and sports personnel covers those who have special skills in arts and sports, such as top winners of domestic and international arts competitions, the Olympics, and Asian Games, but the proposed amendment includes popular culture and arts.
