Lawyers for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard will meet again before the verdict is finalized.
On Friday, June 24, the two lawyers will gather at the Fairfax County Circuit Court to attend a hearing to decide whether to proceed with the proposed settlement in the defamation lawsuit.
Lawyers for Johnny Depp and Amber Heard will meet each other again before the ruling is finalized.
The lawsuit was filed by actor Johnny Depp against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, for “defamation” regarding an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in 2018.
The trial, which began in mid-April of this year, was settled on June 1. Johnny’s lawsuit was approved and Amber was ordered to pay $10.35 million in compensation.
Meanwhile, Judge Penny Alcatraz, who was in charge of the trial, postponed the finalization of the judgment until Friday, June 24, in order to find a way for Johnny and Amber to reach a settlement.
Earlier this month, Johnny’s attorney, Benjamin Chu, hinted in an informational interview that Johnny may be excused from paying damages. This, he said, is contingent on Amber not appealing.
For him, this is not about the money,” said attorney Benjamin Chu, “this was about him regaining the reputation he once had. And he has done it with flying colors,” he added.
Amber’s attorney, Elaine Bredehoeft, also asserted that Amber “has no ability to pay compensation.
Sources revealed to The Post that Amber’s finances are “on fire” due to the high legal fees she has invested in this trial.
At the hearing, the parties are expected to discuss various possibilities, such as reducing or waiving compensation, or a payment plan.
Johnny and Amber are not expected to attend the hearing.
