Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese international who plays for Manchester United in England’s first division, reportedly wants to leave the club before the 2022-23 season. While there were reports that the club would be open to his release, the Daily Mirror reported that the move has been halted by the club’s sponsors.

Clubs reportedly willing to let him go, but several sponsors have rejected the move.

Ronaldo has not joined the team for the first day of the season due to “family reasons,” but United coach Eric ten Huff is willing to allow the Portuguese international to leave the club. Ronaldo himself is said to be keen on competing in the UEFA Champions League (CL), but the sponsors who helped him make the move last summer may now stand in his way.

Ronaldo’s £500,000-a-week salary was a bottleneck in his return to United, but several sponsors have backed his return. However, according to the article, “The 37-year-old star wants to leave United for the UEFA Europa League in the new season, but sponsors have told the club to let him stay, saying that just one season is not enough for Ronaldo’s huge advertising impact,” according to the report.

Ronaldo has competed in the CL for 19 consecutive seasons and has scored 140 goals in total, surpassing rival Argentine FW Lionel Messi’s total of 125. Ronaldo, who also has 460 million followers on Instagram, wants to finish his career as the most prolific scorer in CL history, and he is said to be more than willing to fight in the CL in the new season to achieve that ambition.

With clubs like Chelsea of England, Napoli of Italy, and Sporting CP of Portugal all being mentioned as possible destinations for Ronaldo, will we see him in the CL again in the 2022-23 season?
