Johnny Depp’s defense attorney reacts to Amber Heard’s request to “vacate the judgment”.
On June 1 of this year, the defamation trial filed by actor Johnny Depp against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, was settled with Johnny’s side’s claim being accepted. Amber Heard was left owing a hefty $10.35 million in damages. Dissatisfied with the verdict, Amber’s lawyers demanded a “do-over” of the trial, claiming that the jury that participated in the trial was inadequate.
Counsel for Johnny Depp’s side responded to Amber Heard’s request to “vacate” the verdict.
According to Amber’s attorney, the jury was selected from residents of Virginia, where the trial took place, and one of them had the same address and last name. Amber’s side claimed that a 77-year-old person was selected, but that a 52-year-old person actually appeared in court. Amber’s side claims that the decision is invalid because the person who was selected was 77 years old.
Johnny’s attorney finally responded to Amber’s claims.
He said, “I’m not upset at all. There is no precedent in the past that would justify ‘reversing the judgment and remanding the case’ if the person assigned by Ms. Heard as juror number 15 and the person present were not the same person, because this affected the judgment against her,” he said, dismissing Amber’s argument in one fell swoop. He added, “Ms. Heard’s side has not presented any definitive evidence. Therefore, I would say that her conjectural claims have failed,” he added.
The court case that led to this was sparked by Amber’s 2018 op-ed in the Washington Post, in which she claimed to be a victim of domestic violence. Johnny responded to the op-ed, claiming that it was written as if he was the perpetrator. He sued Amber for defamation, claiming that her image as a public figure had been damaged.
As a result, Amber was ordered to pay $10.35 million in damages, but Amber’s lawyer later asserted on a TV program that “she has no ability to pay.
