The Netflix movie “Blonde,” in which Ana de Armas, known for her role in “Knives Out,” plays Marilyn Monroe, is getting a lot of attention. After the release of the trailer for “Knives Out: The Detective and the Secret of the House of Blades,” there was a backlash about Ana’s Cuban accent, to which the Marilyn Monroe Foundation has come to the defense of the actress.
Ana was a wonderful casting choice, capturing Marilyn’s charm, humanity, and vulnerability.

Blonde” is based on the novel of the same name by author Joyce Carol Oates. Director Andrew Dominik adapted the work into a fictional biography that traces the life of Marilyn Monroe (Norma Jeane Baker) from a small-town American girl to a Hollywood starlet and the many trials and tribulations in her journey. The film is Netflix’s original content, and is also the subject of much discussion due to its NC-17 rating (no viewing for those under 17).
When the trailer was released, it was revealed that Ana’s Cuban accent was still present. While there has been some critical backlash to this, others have said that Ana’s accent has nothing to do with the quality of the film.
Although Monroe’s estate management company has not officially approved “Blonde,” it was quick to voice its support for Ana’s casting. Mark Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group, which owns Marilyn Monroe’s estate, said, “Marilyn Monroe is a special icon of Hollywood and pop culture that transcends generations and history. The actors taking on this role know they have a big role to play. Just watching the trailer, I think Anna was wonderfully cast, capturing Marilyn’s charm, humanity, and vulnerability. I can’t wait to see the whole movie!” she commented.
Anna had previously revealed to The Times of London that she spent nearly a year trying to capture Marilyn’s accent and characteristic breathing before filming began. She described the grueling process as “great torture” and said that after more than nine months of dialect instruction and ADR sessions, “my brain was fried.”
