Stranger Things” supported by the VFX team

After a break in filming due to the new coronavirus, all episodes of Season 4 of the “Stranger Things” drama series will be available for distribution in July 2022. It is no exaggeration to say that Season 4 has been more highly acclaimed than ever, and the production team has done a great job.

The fact that production did not go according to schedule and that filming had to be prolonged due to infection control measures must have been difficult for the producers and others, but on the other hand, the VFX team was lucky. VFX supervisor Julian Helly revealed the following behind-the-scenes story to Collider.

Julian Helly, VFX supervisor, revealed the following behind-the-scenes story to Collider: “There’s an interesting fact. We started working on this drama [Season 4] more than two years ago, before the pandemic. We started developing some of the material, some of the looks, before the pandemic. And when production was interrupted, we continued to work on one or two scenes, one being an aerial view over Hawkins, following bats flying over Hawkins. Then next, I started on Creel House. It took us a year and a half to two years to complete this scene, with different animations. We had a lot of time, so we took a very long time to develop the scene. I think it was very good.”

The Creel House, the house where Henry Creel lived and where Vecna was based on the other side of the world. We don’t know which scene was in this house, but its production took nearly two years!

From the way Julian talks about it, it seems that if the pandemic had not happened, it would have had to be completed more quickly. The pandemic was difficult, but it was good that the creators were able to maintain their commitment.

Actors who were not able to be on set, their scenes were composited.

Incidentally, there are some unexpected scenes in Season 4 that were aided by VFX because of the pandemic. Billy’s death created darkness in Max’s heart, but Daker Montgomery, who played him, reprised his role as the hallucinated Billy caused by Vecna. The scene in the cemetery where Billy’s grave is located was supposed to have been shot with Sadie Sink as Max and Daker actually confronting each other, but that was actually a composite.

Daker is Australian and was in Australia during the pandemic and could not travel to the U.S. at the time of filming. In an interview with EW, director Shawn Levy revealed, “The schedule had to be rescheduled many, many, many times, there were many lockdowns, many updates to the rules [for infection control], and strict immigration restrictions,” and the film was finally shot in front of blue backs at an Australian studio. The filming took place in front of a blue backdrop in a studio in Australia, with Sean providing direction via Zoom.

The footage of Max and Billy shot in various locations was combined using digital technology to complete the scene. The production site faced many unusual difficulties, but the production team deserves a big round of applause for completing Season 4, which still boasts a high level of quality.
