Twins superstar infielder Correa prepared a “surprise gift” for his sister’s 14th birthday. He invited her to Angel Stadium, and before the game, Shohei Ohtani of the Angels appeared in front of his sister.
She was so thrilled, she cried.
Correa explains how it happened, “She is a huge, huge Ohtani fan. Since she was fascinated, she has been studying Japanese for three years. She always checks out his first start and watches the highlights. She originally liked BTS and K-pop, but when Ohtani came here, she was immediately hooked,” she explained.
In fact, last year we planned a surprise for him to meet Otani, but the schedule didn’t work out. But this time, he moved from the Astros to the Twins, and the Angels game was scheduled for August 13, his sister’s birthday. It really was perfect timing.”
Correa asked the Twins’ public relations department to contact the Angels and negotiate a meeting with Otani. Ohtani readily agreed, and the meeting was set up.
When the younger sister met Otani and received his picture and autograph, Correa says, “She was so moved that she cried more than she cried. She talked to Otani using the Japanese she is studying.
Correa had one more surprise in store: a solo home run in the first inning. When he stepped on home plate, he pointed to the back of the back net where his sister and parents were sitting. Then, in the eighth inning, Ohtani hit a solo shot to center field, his 26th of the season.
I hit a home run for my sister, and Otani hit one too. It was a perfect day for her. I’ll never forget this day, and I’m very grateful to Otani. After the game, the star infielder’s expression changed from that of an athlete to that of a kind brother who loves his sister.
