Popular singer Shakira, 45, broke her silence for the first time since her breakup with Gerard Pique, her boyfriend of 11 years, and described it as “incredibly hard”.
In a recently published cover story for Elle Digital, Shakira explained that she has intentionally “stayed silent” since her breakup with Gerard first came to light in early June.

Shakira commented, “So it’s been hard not only for me but also for my children,” Shakira’s son with Pique, “especially since I’m still in the thick of it and it’s hard to talk about it and I’m in the public eye, so our breakup is not like a normal breakup.” Referring to Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7, she added, “It was incredibly hard.”
Shakira claims that since the news broke, she has been trying to protect her children as paparazzi have been camped outside their home 24/7.
Shakira attributes her breakup with Gerard to “their ambitious careers,” telling the magazine that after Milan and Sasha started school, the family had to decide whether to move to the United States for her music career or stay in Barcelona, where Gerard plays.
‘One of the two had to make the effort and the sacrifice. And I did it. I put my career into second gear and came to Spain to help him play (soccer) and win titles. And it was a sacrifice of love,” she stated.
Shakira confessed that she felt she had to “support” Gerard’s dreams more than her own. She revealed how she felt at the time: “Once he [Milan] started school, I knew I had to settle down, put down roots in Barcelona, and be there for him and Gerard and later for Sasha.” As for the breakup, it was reported that Gerard’s affair was probably the cause, but she made no mention of it, noting that “regardless of how things ended and how Gerard and I feel about each other as ex-partners, he is the father of my child,” she said.
