Theme for 2023 Met Gala Announced

The Met Gala, a fashion festival held every year on the first Monday in May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. At this charity event, which also serves as the opening event for the fashion exhibition held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, famous celebrities show off their gorgeous outfits as if they are competing with each other based on a single theme.

The theme for the 2023 Met Gala is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” in honor of the late Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away in 2019.

Karl Lagerfeld, known as the king of fashion, was a major figure in the fashion world, working as a designer for Chanel, Fendi, and his eponymous label, Karl Lagerfeld.

Although he will pass away in 2019 at the age of 85, he is still a strong presence in the fashion world, and model Cara Delevingne recently launched a collaborative collection with Karl, Cara Loves Karl.

The Met Gala, themed around Karl’s indispensable presence in the fashion world, was funded by Chanel, Fendi, Karl Lagerfeld, and Condé Nast.

This immersive exhibition will allow the public to experience an essential part of Lagerfeld’s boundless imagination and passion for innovation, and will reveal his unique artistic practice,” said Max Hollein, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in a press release.

Karl’s theme is controversial.

On the other hand, the fact that Karl is the theme of the 2023 Met Gala has been criticized. Karl, while revered in the fashion world, has been controversial for his criticism of body shape, the MeToo movement, and other issues.

In the past, when his stylist, Karl Templer, was accused of inappropriately touching models and forcing them to remove their underwear without their consent, Karl said, “If you don’t like having your pants taken off, don’t model. There is always a place for you in the convent. They are even recruiting,” he commented in Numéro.

In the same interview, he said she was “fed up” with the MeToo movement, which began after a sexual harassment and sexual assault case against former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

He also commented on Adele in Metro UK, saying, “She’s a little overweight, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice,” and when Brigitte magazine announced that it would use ordinary people instead of professional models as models, he said in Focus magazine, “I’ve been sitting in front of the TV with a bag of potato chips. They are fat moms sitting in front of the TV with a bag of potato chips and saying that thin models are ugly. (It’s a dream and an illusion. Nobody wants to see a round woman,” she commented, frequently criticizing the presence of non-slim women in the fashion world.

Carl’s other controversial actions included sending flowers to Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who was arrested for sexual assault and attempted rape.

British actor Jamila Jamil said in response to the announcement, “This man… certainly had the best talent. But he used the platform he had in a distinctly hateful way. Repeatedly, mainly against women, until his later years, without remorse, without atonement, without apology, without assistance to the groups he attacked,” referring to Carl’s problematic comments, and complaining that he was being honored at the Met Gala.
