A “Cinderella smile” appeared on her face as she made her first hole-in-one on the U.S. Tour.
On October 23 (local time), on the final day of the BMW Women’s Championship (Oak Valley CC, Korea), Hinako Shibuno of Japan achieved her first hole-in-one on the par-3 7th hole.
Her “Cinderella smile” was on full display as she hit the shot to her heart’s content.
Shibuno, who started the day at 2-under 38th place, was on a roll after making consecutive birdies at the par-5 2nd and the par-4 3rd, and was on a roll at the par-3 7th. After her tee shot bounced in front of the pin, the ball rolled straight into the cup. The cheers from the surrounding golfers and the gallery made Shibuno realize that she had achieved a hole-in-one. After showing her surprise, Shibuno opened her arms wide in joy, and smiled broadly.
This is Shibuno’s first hole-in-one on the U.S. Tour. She has had two hole-in-ones on the Japan Tour, on the first day of the 2018 Earth Mondamin Cup and on the first day of the 2020 Mitsubishi Electric Ladies.
Shibuno’s meeting shot was posted on the official LPGA Twitter with a video, which read, “Hinako Shibuno did it, an ace on the par-3 7th hole at the BMW Women’s Championship! It’s her third ace of the week!” with a congratulatory message.
This was met with a lot of positive feedback from golf fans at home and abroad, including “That’s fantastic! Congratulations!” “Great hole-in-one! Great smile!” She’s got it!” Former Japanese rugby representative Shotaro Onishi also retweeted the message “Hole in one” on his official Twitter page.
Among them, sports caster Namika Wada, who broadcast the tournament live on the satellite broadcasting station WOWOW, could not hide her excitement and updated her official Twitter page. She paid tribute to Shibuno with an emoji of a tearful face.
I am happy to have been able to witness this moment live,” she said. In fact, I was also in charge of the play-by-play when she achieved a hole-in-one at the 2018 Mitsubishi Electric Ladies, so I selfishly felt a connection with her. Congratulations!”
Shibuno finished the day with one eagle, three birdies, and no bogeys, including a hole-in-one, for a 67. She finished the tournament with a total of 7-under par 281, tying for 19th place. Next week, she will play the “Mitsubishi Electric Ladies” on the domestic tour, where she will try to win the tournament again. Expectations are high for her to show her “Cinderella smile” again in her quest for her 7th win on the domestic tour.
