Prince Harry, the second son of King Charles of the British royal family, who retired from the high royalty in March 2020, has announced that his memoirs, “Spare,” which chronicles his life, will be published on January 10, 2023.

Incidentally, the title of the book carries a heavier meaning for Prince Harry and the second son of the royal family of the generation before him than people might think.

The title of the book, “Spare,” means “reserve” or “substitute,” which needs no explanation. Since ancient times, monarchs and their siblings have been described as “heirs and their spares. Prince Harry has an elder brother, Prince William, who is promised to become the monarch in the future, and he is in the second position both in the sibling relationship and in the order of succession to the throne.

Unlike the heir, the “spare” has freedom, but is also a complex entity that does not have a clear role like the eldest child. And once the firstborn has a child, his importance and influence diminish along with his position in the line of succession. Indeed, the birth of three children between Prince William and his wife, Catherine, Prince George, the eldest son, Princess Charlotte, the eldest daughter, and Prince Louis, the second son, has dropped Prince Harry, once third in line to the throne, to fifth.

In a 2016 interview with The Sunday Times, Prince Harry said, “I am in a privileged position. I want to take advantage of that position as much as I can until I become boring or George becomes more interesting,” he joked, “There’s nothing more painful than having a period of time when you were making a big difference in your life and then suddenly, for whatever reason, you’re gone. There is nothing more painful than to have a time of great change in your life and then suddenly, for whatever reason, you are gone,” he said, expressing anxiety about the changing circumstances that will surround him when Prince George comes of age.

Although the publisher’s press release does not indicate that Prince Harry’s relationship with Prince William or the royal family will be addressed in “Spare,” it is assumed that the book will contain episodes that are associated with the title.
