Aleksandr Dugin, a right-wing thinker who is considered the “brains” of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has attracted attention for comments that could be taken as criticism of Mr. Putin over the withdrawal of Russian troops from the southern Ukrainian city of Cherson.

Dugin referred to a classic dealing with the “killing of kings,” in which a king who cannot protect his people is killed. The U.S. Institute of War analyzed on November 12 the growing pushback against Putin from hardliners in Russia.

On November 10, Dugin pointed out on a communications app that the withdrawal from the city of Helson had surrendered “one of Russia’s state capitals,” stressing that a dictator given full power protects his people and the state. In the event of failure, he said, he would suffer the fate of the “Rain King” in English anthropologist Fraser’s classic “The Golden Branches. He is believed to be referring to the content of the book, which states that a ruler who fails to bring rain during a drought will be killed.

Dugin, on the other hand, claimed on November 12 that his criticism of Putin was a “fiction” by the West. He explained that “I and all patriots support Mr. Putin unconditionally.” Dugin is known for his far-right views and fully supports the invasion of Ukraine, where his daughter was killed in a car bomb explosion in August.

The Institute for the Study of War noted that “Mr. Putin is finding it difficult to appease some of the ideological warlords because the military is unable to achieve its ultimate goal of seizing all of Ukraine.
