The World Cup in Qatar, which begins on November 20, will bring the U.S. men’s team back to the World Cup for the first time since 2014. Here is a first look at how much the U.S. players will earn and how that differs from the other competing nations.
Even if they are eliminated in the first round, they will receive million.
Qatar will have a record $440 million ($61.6 billion) in prize money for this year’s tournament, awarding $42 million to the winner, $30 million to the runner-up, $27 million to the third-place finisher, and $25 million to the fourth-place finisher. Also, another $17 million will be awarded to the top eight, $13 million to the top 16, and $9 million to those eliminated in the first round.
Each national soccer federation decides how the prize money will be distributed, but in the case of the U.S., the amount paid is set by a collective bargaining agreement, and a portion will be paid to the U.S. women’s team, even though they are not competing in the tournament.
The 23 members of the U.S. men’s national team will receive $10,000 for every match in Qatar. In addition, 90% of the FIFA prize money they earn will be split equally between the 46 members of the men’s and women’s teams. This means that even if the U.S. is eliminated in the first round, the men will each receive approximately $206,000, while the winner will receive approximately $822,000.
Oddsmakers predicting the winning nation place the U.S. as the 20th out of 32 teams to win the World Cup, and with that in mind, the reward they will get is likely to be on the low end of the minimum amount.
In contrast, South Korea will reward each player who makes the team with about $15,000, paying about $23,000 for each win and $8,000 for each draw, team spokesman Jay Ahn told Forbes. The team will also receive a bonus of $76,000 for advancing out of the group league and $150,000 for advancing to the quarterfinals, for a total of about $390,000 if the Korean team miraculously wins the tournament, he said.
For the German team, they will receive a bonus of approximately $415,000 for winning the tournament and approximately $52,000 per player for making it to the top 16. Australian players will get a registration bonus of about $150,000 and 50% of the prize money will be shared, so the total compensation could reach about $680,000.
Meanwhile, it is the Senegalese players who have qualified for the World Cup on the most favorable terms: each player from that country who won the Africa Cup of Nations in February has already received $87,000 in cash and 700 square meters of land near the capital Dakar.
■ Thousands of Migrant Workers Die
When FIFA selected Qatar to host the 2022 World Cup nearly 12 years ago, the organization allegedly took bribes from the Qatari government. The decision remains highly controversial, as does the fact that homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and that women need permission from a male guardian to drive or travel abroad. However, there does not appear to be much movement to boycott the tournament.
Qatar spent at least $220 billion on the World Cup, making it the most expensive World Cup in history. Thousands of migrant workers have died in the country since the World Cup was announced, and the deaths have been linked to massive construction work.
