What is Stiff-Person Syndrome?

Stiff-Person Syndrome is a disease of the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system), in which commands from the brain to the muscles through the spinal cord do not work properly, causing the muscles of the body to remain stiff, which interferes with daily activities such as walking, and can also cause cramps and stiffness (tonicity). Some media have described this symptom as “a disease that makes you as immobile as a sculpture.

These symptoms can be triggered by the surrounding environment, worsened by loud noises or physical stimuli, and can become bedridden if the symptoms affect the entire body, or the lungs may become immobile and stop breathing. These symptoms are often accompanied by severe pain. Although symptoms may occur only in one arm, leg, or shoulder, they appear mainly in the back, hips, and legs, and as the disease progresses, the muscles of the entire body become stiff. The number of people suffering from this disease is very small, and although there are no clear data, one theory suggests that as many as one in a million people suffer from the disease.

Also, according to the Daily Mail, there is currently no cure for the disease, but it is possible to slow its progression.

Celine Dion, who has publicly announced her illness

Celine Dion posted a video on Instagram on December 8. There, she announced that she is suffering from Stiff Person Syndrome and that she will cancel some of her tour performances.

She said, “I have struggled with my health issues for a long time. It is very difficult to face this struggle and talk about what I am struggling with…. I was recently diagnosed with a very rare neurological disease called Stiff-Person Syndrome, which affects about 1 in 1 million people. Much is still unknown about this rare disease, but I now know that it is the cause of the spasms I have.

Unfortunately, the spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes making it difficult for me to walk and I am unable to sing with my vocal cords as I used to. Today I am here to tell you that it is no longer possible for me to resume my European tour in February.

Celine is currently focusing on her treatment with a wonderful team of doctors. Her children are also providing generous support.

However, the rehabilitation seems to be quite difficult. “I am working with a sports medicine therapist to regain the strength to perform again, but I must admit that it is quite a struggle,” said Celine. However, “All I know how to do is sing. I’ve been singing all my life and I love singing the most.” “I have to focus on my treatment now, but I have ‘hope’ that I am on the road to recovery,” she said tearfully, never giving up on the idea of performing on stage again. She also said in tears that she has never given up on performing on stage again.

She concluded her speech by saying to her fans, “Thank you so much for your kind words of sympathy on social networking sites. Please take care of yourselves. Stay healthy. I love you all and really hope to see you soon.
