The most difficult scene to shoot in “Top Gun Maverick” was not the flight scene. What did the director think was the most difficult scene to shoot?
The director reveals the most difficult scene to shoot in “Top Gun Maverick.
One of the highlights of “Top Gun Maverick,” the biggest hit movie of 2022, is the realistic flight scene. Tom Cruise, who stars in the film, performed most of the stunts himself, and the cast members who play young pilots endured grueling training and actually flew in fighter planes during the filming.
However, when we asked Joseph Kosinski, the director of this film, about the “most difficult scene to shoot,” he gave us a surprising answer. The first scene that comes to mind is the flight scene, but according to the director, the scene with Maverick and Penny on the yacht, played by Tom, was the most difficult. In an interview with The Wrap, Kosinski explained the reason for this.
In an interview with The Wrap, director Kosinski explained the reason for the scene: “The yacht scene was, in a way, the most difficult. In a sense, the yacht scene was the most difficult, because there were so many aspects of it that we couldn’t control. We needed the wind to make that scene great, and we had to go find it. I think that effort was conveyed to the audience when they saw the film. I think people responded to the film because it was not something that was set up and shot in advance. This film was shot as realistically as possible by actually going to the site. And that comes across to the viewer.
We don’t sail boats, we land on them. 🛬

Incidentally, Kosinski also mentioned this scene in an interview with Collider, saying, “This is the third time it was used in the film: the first time we shot it off the coast of Long Beach, there was no wind. The third time we went to San Francisco, where the wind was always strong in the bay, and finally we were able to shoot the scene we wanted.
The most difficult scene to shoot was the nautical scene, but the craziest scene was the one where Maverick proves that the mission is possible by flying the course in 2 minutes and 15 seconds.
