The 17th game of the Premier League season took place on December 27th between Chelsea and Bournemouth.
Chelsea, who were tentatively ranked 8th, hosted Bournemouth, who were tentatively ranked 14th, in their first game back in the Premier League.
Chelsea, provisional eighth in the table, had lost four of their last five official matches before the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and were also winless in five league matches, including three straight defeats, when they hosted Bournemouth, provisionally 14th in the table, in their first match back at home.
Chelsea took the lead in the 16th minute when Raheem Sterling’s cross from the right was met by Kai Hafele, who ran onto the far side of the field and slid in to push home with his left foot.
In the 24th minute, Mason Mount took a little time to get on the end of a Hafele drop and swung in a controlled ball from outside the area to the right corner to give Chelsea the lead for the rest of the half.
In the second half, Chelsea had to make a substitution in the 53rd minute when England defender Reece James, who was forced to miss the World Cup due to injury, requested to be substituted, but Chelsea kept Bournemouth from scoring until the end and the time expired 2-0.
Chelsea’s first win since the resumption of operations snapped a losing streak and gave them their first win in six league matches since a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa in the 11th round on October 16. Bournemouth, on the other hand, lost for the first time in two league matches and suffered their second consecutive official defeat since the resumption of operations.
Chelsea will play away to Nottingham Forest on January 1, while Bournemouth will play at home to Crystal Palace on December 31.
