Fashion designer Vivienne Westwood passed away on December 29 (local time). She was 81 years old. It was announced on her official Instagram page that she passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in Clapham, South London.
The “Queen of Punk” reigned over the fashion world for more than 50 years, leading the British punk rock movement in the 1970s with her partner Malcolm McLaren of the Sex Pistols band. She led the punk rock movement in the United Kingdom in the 1970s. The legendary “Worlds End” store in West London that she founded with Malcolm changed its name with the changing times to “Let it Rock,” “Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die,” “Sex,” and “Seditionaries,” and still stands at 430 King’s Road. 430 King’s Road, where it still stands as a mecca for punk style.
In 1981, Westwood debuted with a collection called “Pirates. The open and avant-garde looks inspired by pirates were a big hit at the time. He continued to develop his own unique avant-garde worldview, introducing such iconic masterpieces as the “Love Jacket,” with its collar resembling a heart, and the “Harris Tweed” collection, which incorporated traditional English tweed fabric into a punk look.
In 1993, she married designer Andreas Kronthaler. He is both public and private partner, and is in charge of the creative direction of ANDREAS KRONTHALER FOR VIVIENNE WESTWOOD.
Westwood was also active in politics and environmental activism: in 2015, she boarded an armored personnel carrier used by the military and rode to the home of then British Prime Minister James Cameron to challenge the British government’s hydraulic fracturing shale gas development. And in 2019, during London Fashion Week, he led a protest with a British environmental activist group calling for energy-related business corporations to be held accountable for the environmental destruction of the Papuan rainforest.
As a designer and activist, Westwood’s lifelong punk attitude will continue to be etched in fashion history.
