The Buffalo Bills announced early Tuesday, January 3, that safety (S) Damar Hamlin (24) went into cardiac arrest after a tackle during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, January 2.
He is currently under sedation and the situation remains unpredictable.
With just over six minutes remaining in the first quarter of Monday Night Football in Week 17 of the season, Hamlin tackled Bengals wide receiver (WR) Tee Higgins, who caught a 13-yard pass. Hamlin got up under his own power but immediately fell backward. Hamlin was given CPR on the field. According to the Bills, his heartbeat was restored on the field, and he was then transported by ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for further examination and treatment.
The NFL suspended the game after Hamlin collapsed, but later decided to postpone it.
During a conference call held a few hours after the announcement of the postponement of the game, Troy Vincent, executive vice president of NFL personnel, insisted that there was no mention of a five-minute warm-up period before play resumed, which was mentioned during the “ESPN” broadcast.
It never crossed our minds to talk about warming up for the resumption of play,” Vincent said. It’s absurd. It was insensitive.
The Bills players were scheduled to return to Buffalo from Cincinnati on Monday night, but Vincent said some members of the team are staying in the area to support Hamlin. NFL Network’s Cameron Ursu reported that head coach Zach Taylor and other members of the Bengals’ team were also concerned about Hamlin’s condition and rushed to the hospital, according to NFL Network.
NFL Vice President of Communications and Public Policy Jeff Miller said on the conference call that there are no plans at this time to resume the Bills-Bengals game and that a decision will be made at the appropriate time. The game was suspended with a little over six minutes left in the first quarter with the Bengals leading 7-3.
