After careful consideration, I have decided to retire from club and national soccer with immediate effect. I was very happy to be able to realize my dream of playing the sport I love. Soccer has given me some of the best moments of my life. The events that I have experienced over the past 17 seasons will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the future holds for me.

From my first season at Southampton to my last with Los Angeles FC, everything in between has shaped my club career. I am very proud and grateful. Also, representing my country for 111 games and captaining my country was a dream come true.

I don’t think it’s possible to thank everyone who has been part of my journey and I am indebted to so many people who have helped to change my life and shape my career in ways I could never have dreamed of when I started playing soccer at the age of nine.”

Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid, and Los Angeles FC; every manager, coach, and staff member, every teammate, every enthusiastic and supportive fan, my agent, my wonderful friends and family, the impact you have had on me is immeasurable.”

He continued, “I wouldn’t be writing this now if it weren’t for the dedicated support my parents and sister gave me when I was young, and the love and support of my wife and children. And the love and support my wife and children have given me. Thank you for your unwavering support and for leading me down this path.

I move forward with great anticipation into the next stage of my life. It’s a time of change and transition and a chance for new adventures.
