Legendary British guitarist Jeff Beck, who rose to fame with The Yardbirds, passed away on January 10 local time at the age of 78.
Beck’s family, through his agent, released a statement on Twitter on January 11.
On behalf of his family, we are deeply, deeply saddened by the news of Jeff Beck’s passing. After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he passed away peacefully yesterday. He also asked that his privacy be respected while he deals with this grief.

Born June 24, 1944, in Surrey, England, Beck was an eight-time Grammy Award winner and two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
In March 1965, Beck replaced Eric Clapton in the Yardbirds. The following year, however, Beck left the group during a U.S. tour after a public feud with the members became public; in January 1967, he formed the Jeff Beck Group, but Beck disbanded the group on the eve of Woodstock in 1969. The group reunited the following year in 1970, with vocalist Alex Ligertwood, keyboardist Max Middleton, drummer Cozy Powell, and bassist Clive Chaman.
Beck was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Yardbirds in 1992 and as a solo artist in 2009. He has won six Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and one for Best Pop Instrumental Performance, as well as a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
Beck had recently completed a tour with Johnny Depp in support of their 2022 album, “18.
