Yukihiro Takahashi had a great influence on international celebrities.

Yukihiro Takahashi of the Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) had just finished surgery to remove a brain tumor in the summer of 2020 and was undergoing treatment to return to work, when his condition deteriorated at the end of 2022 and he passed away on January 11, 2023, at the age of 71.

Yukihiro Takahashi, who supported the techno sound as the one and only drummer, influenced many people both in Japan and abroad, and various people sent their condolence messages following Yukihiro Takahashi’s death.

Among them were international artists. Questlove, who is active as the drummer of The Roots and served as the music director for the 93rd Academy Awards, uploaded a video on Instagram of YMO’s first appearance as a Japanese artist on the TV program “Soul Train” and wrote, “Terrific, futuristic, innovative Yukihiro Takahashi of the awesome and futuristic and innovative YMO has moved on (to the other side). A man who made history. Words can’t replace him,” he commented in remembrance.

In his post, Beck wrote, “I had all of YMO’s records when I was a little boy. May he rest in peace,” and keyboardist Manny Mark said, “A great man of music. His influence in pop music is so surreptitious; you could say YMO invented ‘space jams. And Takahashi is one of the greatest drummer/singers of all time; each member of YMO has a great side project, and Takahashi’s discography is like a short story. My condolences go out to his family, friends, and fans. Rest in peace, Yukihiro Takahashi,” said neo-soul great James Poyser, “one of the first songs I learned by ear as a kid…. R.I.P.” and Sean Lennon, the child of former The Beatles’ John Lennon and Yoko Ono, mourned Yukihiro Takahashi by leaving a gassho emoji.

Other celebrities such as John Mayer, Kate Hudson, and Lindsay Lohan responded to this Questlove post with likes.

Yukihiro Takahashi was memorialized by artists active around the world. This event proved that his influence was that great.
