In Korea, the “Military Service Act” obliges all able-bodied males between the ages of 18 and 28 to serve in the military for 18 to 21 months. However, medal winners from the Olympics and Asian Games, classical musicians and dancers who have won top prizes in certain competitions, and others may be exempted from military service or have their service period reduced.
Jin, 30, a member of the popular K-pop group BTS, who is currently serving in the military, reports on his recent situation.
Until now, K-pop artists were exempt from the exemption, but in June 2021, an “amended law” came into effect that allows them to postpone their military service until age 30 if they are active in the field of popular culture or art. BTS, which has achieved worldwide success as an artist, was subject to this law, and its enlistment was postponed.
Jin, the oldest member of the group to turn 30, enlisted in the Korean Armed Forces on December 13 of last year. His agency released a statement saying, “We will spare no effort and provide continuous support until the day Jin fulfills his military service obligation and returns home in good health. On the day of his enlistment, the other members also came to see him off.
