On Wednesday, January 18, guitarist Joe Trohman of the four-piece rock band Fall Out Boy announced that he is leaving the band to focus on his mental health.

Updating his Instagram with the announcement, Joe Trohman said, “Neil Young once exclaimed that it is better to burn out than to fade away. I’m not going to give away all the details, but I have to tell you that my mental health has deteriorated rapidly over the past few years,” he continued.

So I’m going to step away from my work to avoid the possibility of just disappearing and never coming back. Unfortunately, I’ll also be leaving Fall Out Boy for a while,” he added regretfully. It’s painful to make this decision, especially when I’m about to release a new album that I take great pride in. The question remains, ‘Am I coming back? I’m coming back, 100%.

In the meantime, I have to recover. I have to take care of myself and my mental health first. I want to thank my band members, my family, and everyone else who has understood and respected this difficult but necessary decision. See you soon.

Fall Out Boy was formed in 2001 by Joe and bassist Pete Wentz. Soon after, vocalist Patrick Stump and drummer Andy Harley joined the band, and the style of the band became what it is today.
