For those of you who haven’t noticed yet, let me explain. The Andy Reid-led Kansas City Chiefs are about to play Andy Reid’s old team, the Philadelphia Eagles, in this Super Bowl.

This is one of the storylines surrounding the 57th Super Bowl that will be constantly buzzed about until the game begins on Sunday, February 12 locally.

The day after the Chiefs’ head coach, HC Reid, won the AFC (American Football Conference) championship game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the matchup with the Eagles–and the emotional connection that comes with it — was asked if it makes preparation more difficult than playing another team.

In response, HC Reed said, “To get straight to the point, they are a very good football team, so that’s where the energy is going to go. When kickoff comes, we’re going to face that team,” Reed said.

‘It’s the players we’re going to face. I’m not aware of coaches, uniforms, all those things. We have a solid game plan and we are focused on performing at our best. I think we’re going to focus heavily on that, and we’re going to erase all the hype surrounding the game, regardless of who we’re playing. This is going to be a pretty big game for everybody, including you guys, and it’s a very big deal. It’s the Super Bowl. But we’re going to put all that stuff behind us and work together to come up with a game plan that really matters.”

Reid, who was the former head coach of the Eagles for 14 seasons, compiled a 130-93-1 record during that time, including a Super Bowl appearance, but never brought the Lombardi Trophy back to Philadelphia. HC Reed has mentioned many times in the past that the decision to part ways came after both sides felt that a fresh start would be in the best interest of all involved after a 4-12 finish to the 2012 season.

He said, “Oh, we both–hear me, I’ve been here for 14 years. That’s a very long time to stay somewhere. That was a great 14 years, and I loved every moment of it,” Reed HC continued.

Jeffrey Lurie (owner of the Eagles) is a great owner and he did a great job with me, my family, everything. But we ended up with that kind of result. They should have needed it and I thought it was a good idea. Jeffrey must have felt the same way. I thought it would be good for the team and good for me. I’m grateful that he felt that way. And we parted with a great deal of respect for each other. I think he’s doing a really great job. (Howie Roseman (Eagles general manager) is part of that. He was involved, too. I’m happy for him. I don’t think he gets enough credit for what he’s done against that team and how he’s inspired them. I love Philadelphia. I love that city, and I’ve been blessed to have been in three amazing places in the NFL. I love every moment in Kansas City.”

HC Reid took over the Chiefs in 2013 and led them to a 117-45 record, including one Super Bowl victory and three AFC Championship Game wins. The Chiefs have missed the playoffs only once in the Reid era and have played in five consecutive AFC title games at home.

HC Reid is the fifth coach to play in the Super Bowl against a team he once coached. The others are Pete Carroll with the Seattle Seahawks (vs. Patriots), Jon Gruden with Tampa Bay (vs. Raiders), Dan Reeves with Atlanta (vs. Broncos) and Weeb Ewbank with the New York Jets (vs. Colts). All four of these players are 2-2 against their old opponents.
