On February 19, the 24th match of the Premier League season took place between Manchester U and Leicester.
Manchester U, currently in third place in the Premier League, has been on a roll, unbeaten in seven official matches.
This time, they welcome 14th-placed Leicester to their home turf for their second straight league match. Manchester U will be aiming for their second straight league win, following their win the previous week. Marcus Rashford, who has scored in four straight league games, will be in fine form for the visitors, who will be looking for their second straight win. Leicester will be looking for their third straight league win, following wins against Aston Villa and Tottenham.
In addition to Rashford, Manchester U’s starting lineup includes Wout Weghorst, Bruno Fernandez, and Alejandro Garnacho. For Leicester, Kelechi Iheanacho, Harvey Barnes, and James Maddison were all in the starting lineup.
The first goal came in the 8th minute for Leicester. After winning the ball in midfield and launching a short counter, H. Barnes dribbled up the field, exchanged passes with Iheanacho, and broke into the box. The first time the ball was cleared, Iheanacho was able to get a shot off the line with one touch, but goalkeeper David de Gea saved well. Shortly after, Leicester had another chance. Maddison kept the ball in front of him and passed the ball to Iheanacho, who ran into the box and fired a shot into the net. Iheanacho’s shot was blocked by a defender and went wide.
Leicester’s solid defensive play allowed them to attack quickly, and in the 20th minute, a pass from the final line allowed Tete to cross deep to the right and Iheanacho was able to head the ball into the center of the box, but goalkeeper De Hea made a super save to deny the visitors the first goal.
Manchester U, who had been unable to create any shooting opportunities, took the lead in the 25th minute. Marcel Sabitzer intercepted a defender’s pass, and one-touched it to B. Fernandez, who was positioned in the center of the pitch on the right. The ball was received by B. Fernandez, who sent a through ball with the outside of his right foot, and Rashford, who got behind the DF line, beat the goalkeeper one-on-one and found the back of the net. Rashford’s goal, his fifth in a row in the league, put the home team ahead.
Manchester U took the lead in the 37th minute on a counter. Diogo Dalot made an inner wrap on the right side of the box, took the ball to the edge of the box, and rolled it right to B. Fernandes, who received the ball and fired home. B. Fernandes sent in a sharp cross for Dalot to run onto, but his shot was just wide of the target. Leicester came close to scoring several times on short counters, but could not find the equalizer. The first half ended 1-0.
The home team, leading by one goal, continued to be aggressive in the second half, and in the 49th minute Lisandro Martinez headed in Luke Shaw’s free kick, but his shot hit the crossbar. Shortly after, Rashford dribbled up the left flank, cut in, and swung in a right-foot shot that was saved by Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward.
Manchester U added another goal in the 56th minute. Fletch drew a pass from the final line in the left center of the pitch, made a deft turn, and fed a through ball to Rashford, who got behind the defensive line, carried it into the box, and coolly slotted it home. The offside flag was raised at one point, but VAR ruled that Rashford’s position was onside and he was allowed to score.
Manchester U’s momentum was building in the 61st minute when an interception by L. Martinez led to a run through Sabitzer and Rashford to Jaydon Sancho, who was waiting in the middle of the box. Sancho sent the ball to B. Fernandez, who ran to the right inside the box, and pushed the return pass into the net himself. The home team quickly increased their lead to three goals.
In the 87th minute, Sancho received the ball on the right side of the box, dribbled into the middle of the box, and passed to Weghorst, who was running alongside him. Weghorst took one touch and fired in a shot that was saved by the well-timed goalkeeper Ward.
Manchester U continued to take the lead and did not allow Leicester to counterattack. The game ended 3-0, with Manchester U winning their second straight league game. Leicester has failed to win three in a row. Manchester U will play Liverpool away on March 5, and Leicester will play Arsenal at home on February 25.
