Australian actress Mia Wasikowska (33), known for her roles in films such as Alice in Wonderland (2010), has revealed why she left Hollywood and returned to her hometown.
Mia, who has worked in Hollywood since the age of 15, was cast as Alice in Alice in Wonderland, a Tim Burton x Johnny Depp collaboration.
She has since appeared in several Hollywood films, including the Academy Award-nominated The Kids Are All Right (2010) and Lawless (2012).

In a recent interview with IndieWire magazine, Mia explained her reasons for stepping away from Hollywood and only taking on certain projects: ‘I think I’d be really happy if I could dip in and out sometimes and have a good bit of both worlds. But I definitely didn’t want to be in a place where I was doing monotonous work. I want to do more in life than just being in a trailer,” she responded. He also stated that he is “very happy” with his life now.
Mia made her US TV drama debut in 2008, at the age of 15, on HBO’s In Treatment, and has been working almost non-stop ever since. ‘I didn’t like the lifestyle of going back to the same scene day in day out. I felt disconnected from the larger community,” she said, revealing that the Hollywood style did not suit her.
‘I spent ten to fifteen years completely going to a new city every three months, a new country, a new school every few months.
‘It was really hard, especially when I was young because I didn’t have a foundation. If the payback is good and you feel great doing it, then that’s good, but I didn’t. So I wanted to establish my place on a personal level. Somewhere I belonged, not just on the set where I end up every few weeks.”
Mia’s latest film, Blueback, was released in the US on 3 March. In the Australian production, Mia plays an oceanographer who discovers a rare grouper fish and tries to protect it from poachers.
