The 27th round of the Premier League season took place on 12 March between third-placed Manchester U, who are in contention to qualify for next season’s Champions League, and bottom-placed Southampton, who are in the thick of the battle for survival.

Manchester U’s 16th minute goal was denied by the goalkeeper after Marcus Rashford’s right-footed shot from inside the box after linking up with midfielder Bruno Fernandes on the left flank.

Southampton, meanwhile, had another effort saved by goalkeeper David De Gea in the 25th minute when midfielder Theo Walcott headed in a cross from the left by defender Romain Perreault, but again it was saved by goalkeeper David De Gea. In the 32nd minute, a yellow card for a sliding tackle on midfielder Casemiro was red carded after VAR, giving Southampton a numerical advantage.

Manchester U’s superiority still saw them go in ahead in the 38th minute, when an FK on the right was awarded to Bruno Fernandes, whose cross was met by defender Raphael Varane on the far side, but he was denied by the opposing goalkeeper to end the first half goalless.

In the second half, Southampton went on the offensive, with defender Kyle Walker-Peters’ centring effort down the right flank almost scoring an own goal in the 49th minute, and in the 54th minute a direct FK from ‘masterful’ forward James Ward-Prowse hit the crossbar. The visitors then hit the crossbar in the 54th minute with a direct FK from “masterful” forward James Ward-Prowse.

Southampton then had a decisive moment on the counter in the 64th minute. Walcott won the ball in midfield, received a pass in the opponents’ ranks and tried to run on alone, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper De Gea after a desperate return by Manchester U defender Lisandro Martinez.

Manchester U continued to struggle and in the 68th minute, Bruno Fernandes fired a mid-range effort from near the left-hand corner of the box, which bounced into the goalkeeper’s hands and hit the right-hand post. Shortly afterwards, in the 69th minute, Southampton tried to score from a short corner through Walker Peters, but his effort was also blocked by the post.

The game eventually ended 0-0, with the two sides sharing a point. Casemiro, who was sent off for the second time this season, will serve a four-match suspension and Manchester U will not be able to use him in their next four (domestic) matches, including the FA Cup.
