Drama version of Harry Potter finally gets underway

It has become clear that a dramatisation of the Harry Potter series, which had been rumoured to be in the works for some time, has been officially confirmed. The author J.K. Rowling has been named as one of the executive producers, and according to US Variety, David Hyman, who produced all eight film versions of Harry Potter, is currently negotiating to join as an executive producer.

Below is a teaser video released by HBO Max in the US.

Although there was no announcement regarding the music, it is highly likely that the drama version will use the same theme song as the film version, given that the music from the film version is used in the teaser video.

Ms Rowling’s original novels on which the film version was based are Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but the drama version will be based on the original story, just like the film, and will portray one book per season. However, Warner Bros Discovery describes the drama as a ’10-year series’, so it is conceivable that some titles could be split into two seasons, with a first part and a second part.

In the film version, Daniel Radcliffe played the main character Harry Potter, Rupert Grint played Harry’s best friend Ron and Emma Watson played Hermione, also Harry’s best friend and honours student, who became one of the most popular actors. The drama version will cast a new Harry, Ron and Hermione.

The drama version of Harry Potter will be available in the US on Max, a new streaming service that combines HBO Max and Discovery+. It is planned to be distributed worldwide, and although it has not yet been announced, it is likely to be distributed in Japan on U-NEXT, which has a partnership with HBO Max.

Incidentally, during the Q&A session with the press held after the announcement, it was pointed out that the involvement of Rowling, whose comments and views on transgender issues have been controversial, could have a negative impact on the recruitment of talent for the series, but Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and MAX, said, “This is I don’t think this is the place to do that (answer questions). This is an online conversation and it’s very nuanced and complex, and it’s not something we’re going to interject into. Our priority is what is on the screen. Of course, the story of Harry Potter is a very positive and affirming one, about love and self-acceptance. He avoided making any explicit reference to it, only replying that ‘that is our priority and that is what is projected on the screen’.
