Director defends this casting: ‘The film should be for everyone’
One casting for Disney’s latest film, Peter Pan & Wendy, has been met with outrage.
Peter Pan, a play and novel by Scottish author James Matthew Barrie, was first published in 1904 and has since been adapted into films, musicals and theme park attractions around the world. The story follows the adventures of Peter Pan, a boy who can fly freely, and his sister and brother Wendy, a girl living in London, in Neverland. Walt Disney’s masterpiece. It is a fantasy film filled with the excitement and thrill of a flashback to an irreplaceable moment in childhood that every adult has experienced at least once. The novel and animated masterpiece, which have been loved by children and adults of all ages all over the world, will now be vividly reborn as a live-action version of Peter Pan & Wendy, with a new storyline.
In Peter Pan & Wendy, Peter takes Wendy and her brothers to Neverland, where they meet the forever young Lost Boys. However, the live-action version of the Lost Boys is not all boys, but girls as well. The casting has been met with outrage, but director David Lowry defended the casting decision in an interview with SFX Magazine. ‘The film should belong to everyone, it doesn’t change the film at all. It’s the same story that we all grew up with. It’s different for everyone, but it’s their loss. You’re going to lose a wonderful film-going experience. “They don’t seem too bothered by the opinions of those who voiced their criticisms.
The fact that there are also girls in Lost Boys has been criticised, but she says: ‘It’s not just little boys who want to hold on to their childhood. Girls can fight for Neverland in the same way,” says one defender.
Peter Pan & Wendy is available exclusively on Disney Plus from Friday 28 April.
