Popular singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, who is fighting an alleged plagiarism trial, believes that winning or losing the case will have a significant impact on his future music career.

Ed Sheeran is currently being sued by Ed Townsend, who co-wrote ‘Let’s Get It On’, for the similarity of the chord progression and rhythm of his 2014 hit ‘Thinking Out Loud’ to singer Marvin Gaye’s song ‘Let’s Get It On’ (1973). A copyright infringement lawsuit has been filed by the administrators of his estate.

The trial began last week in New York federal court, with Ed himself appearing in a suit.

During the trial on 1 May (US time), Ed was asked by his lawyer, Ilene Farkas, what would happen if the plaintiffs (Ed Townsend’s heirs) gained ownership of the chord progression of ‘Thinking Out Loud’, to which he replied: ‘If that happens, I’m done. I’ll stop”.

Ed also claimed that the outcome of the trial would have a major impact on his music career, saying, “I’ve worked my whole life as a singer-songwriter and to have it undermined, I think it’s really insulting”.

The lawyer added: “When you wrote ‘Thinking Out Loud’, did you copy anything from ‘Let’s Get It On’?” To this question, Ed immediately replied, “No”.
