 A high-profile top-of-the-table clash between second-placed Arsenal and third-placed Newcastle.

Arsenal, aiming to win the league for the first time in 19 years, had struggled in April with a four-match winless run, but won the ‘Big London Derby’ against Chelsea the previous week to keep their hopes of a comeback alive. This time, they are four points behind leaders Manchester C and travel to Newcastle, who are on a three-match winning streak. Even though it’s a hostile environment, we need a whitewash at all costs.

Bruno Guimarães, Callum Wilson and Alexander Isaac start for Newcastle at home. In contrast, Arsenal have Bukayo Saka, Gabrieu Jesús and Gabrieu Martinelli up front. Other starters included Jorginho and Martin Odegaard .

The first decisive moment came in the second minute for Newcastle. On the counter, Joe Willock ran up the left flank and turned goalwards, Jacob Murphy collected the ball on the far side and swung in a powerful left-foot shot that struck the left post. The home team continued to push forward and in the eighth minute, from a short corner, B. Guimarães’ shot hit Jakub Kiviol in the box. The penalty was initially ruled out as a hand, but the VAR results showed that the penalty was cancelled.

In the 14th minute, Arsenal received the ball on the edge of the opposition box and Odegaard  flashed his left foot. In the 21st minute, Martinelli slipped in a through ball from Odegaard  and fired into the box, but goalkeeper Nick Pope saved. Udegår picked up the spilled ball and fired a shot through the middle, but it was again saved by goalkeeper Pope.

The game continued to go back and forth until the 24th minute, when Saka broke behind the DF line and fired a powerful shot into the box, but goalkeeper Pope blocked it with his body. Newcastle had chances for Willock in the 27th minute and C Wilson in the 29th minute, but both were blocked by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. Arsenal had a decisive chance for Odegaard  in added time, but goalkeeper Pope made a super save. The first half ended 0-1 as it was.

Newcastle, a goal down, had a decisive moment in the 48th minute just before the start of the second half. J Murphy broke deep into enemy territory on the right flank and turned goalwards before Isaac’s header hit the post. Shortly afterwards, from an FK, Fabian Shea fired in a powerful header from close range, but goalkeeper Ramsdale reacted incredibly well to save it. Arsenal’s 51st minute goal saw Martinelli’s well-taken shot from a Jesús pass on the left side of the box narrowly hit the crossbar.

The rest of the game was a fiercely contested affair involving physical contact. Newcastle came close to scoring again and again with sharp attacks from a strong defence, but were thwarted by Arsenal’s focused defence. In the 71st minute, on the counter, Martinelli raced up the left flank and broke into the box, where he grounded the ball back into the middle from deep. The ball hit Shea and was sucked into the goalmouth, giving Arsenal a valuable extra point.

Newcastle pushed forward in the final stages, but Arsenal’s tenacious defence, led by goalkeeper Ramsdale, kept them from conceding a goal. The clock ticked on with a change of players. The game ended 0-2, with Arsenal defending their lead to win back-to-back league games and tentatively reduce the gap to Manchester C at the top of the table to ‘1’ point. Next up, Newcastle play away to Leeds on 13 May, while Arsenal play Brighton at home on 14 May.
