The Little Mermaid is a No.1 hit in the US, surpassing Aladdin.
The Little Mermaid, a Disney animation milestone, was released in the US in 1989 and led to the creation of the Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin classics. While the live-action version is set to open in Japan on 9 June (Friday), the film opened in the US on 26 May and grossed approximately USD 95.5 million (approximately JPY 13.3 billion) over three days, including the opening day on Friday, making it the biggest box office hit in the US, surpassing “Aladdin”.
Aladdin, released in 2019, was an extraordinarily successful film with a US opening of approximately $91.5 million, a worldwide final box office of approximately $1.05 billion (approximately ¥147 billion) and a final box office of ¥12 billion in Japan. Exceeding those opening results, The Little Mermaid is a fitting start for a live-action adaptation of the Disney musical milestone.
In addition to its performance, the film has already received rave reviews in the USA. Many reviews have called it the best live-action adaptation in Disney’s history, with many saying that Halle’s singing voice is both gentle and powerful, not to mention the timeless classics ‘Part of Your World’ and ‘Under the Sea’, about the original live-action songs, and about Halle’s performance, “Halle’s voice is both gentle and powerful. Halle shone brighter than the sun as Ariel” and “With Halle, Disney has all the right reasons to remake this classic”, among other rave reviews. Symbolic of this, the film has a high audience score of 95% on the film criticism website Rotten Tomatoes (as of 29 May). Across the US, audiences were treated to a weekend of Ariel’s adventures and singing.
Halle Bailey sang enthusiastically! ‘Part of Your World’ in her stunning voice.
To celebrate the blockbuster start of The Little Mermaid in the US, Halle Bailey, who played Ariel, sang ‘Part of Your World’ at the California Disneyland Resort for the first time.
Halle appeared in a dress inspired by the image of Ariel, Princess of the Sea, against the backdrop of the Sleeping Beauty castle, which is illuminated by blue waving lights, recreating the mysterious sea world where Ariel and her friends live.
During the live performance, she sang “Part of Your World” with a beautiful voice that made Beyoncé offer her a management contract. She proved why she was chosen to play Ariel, not only for the beauty of her voice, but also for her ability to express the sadness of Ariel, the mermaid who longs for the world between the worlds, with a strength that shows Ariel’s core strength.
Halle received thunderous applause and cheers from the fans at the Disneyland Resort for his performance as Ariel, who has “the most beautiful voice of anyone”. After her performance, she wrote on her Twitter account: “This is the first time I’ve sung live since filming. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to sing on stage at Disneyland”.
Fans in Japan, who were among the first to catch the video released in the US, commented, “It was so amazing, I was glued to the screen for three minutes and my tear glands were watering…”, “This shows why Halle was cast as Ariel at first glance”, “Halle Bailey’s ” Halle Bailey’s “Part of Your World” is so good, everyone thinks she’s the only one”.
