The new film, which opened in the US on 26 May, stars Halle Bailey as the young mermaid Ariel.

She takes on human form in exchange for a sea witch and her voice in order to explore the human world. The film also features original musical numbers by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, including the iconic ‘Part of Your World’, ‘Under the Sea’, ‘Kiss the Girl’ and ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’, as well as Menken and Lin= Manuel Miranda co-wrote a new song, which is also included.

A Twitter user released a fragment of the making of ‘Under the Sea’ from The Little Mermaid. The video shows Halle sitting on a person covered in blue and being carried through the sea on the floor. Next to her is a small crab figurine, like Sebastian, who is also on top of the person, with four other people around him flooring him in the same way. This has received comments such as ‘funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life’, ‘I’m amazed I can keep a straight face’ and ‘I’m laughing so hard I’m sick to my stomach’.

According to Screen Rant, the live-action version of The Little Mermaid is approximately half live-action and half CG. This behind-the-scenes look shows how much of Ariel’s underwater environment is created by computer. Given that at least half of Ariel’s surroundings, her animal companions and her own body have been replaced by computer-generated depictions, it is probably safe to assume that the majority of the underwater scenes are almost entirely computer-generated.
