In conjunction, Universal Pictures announced the production of a new spin-off film (title yet to be determined) in which Hobbs will be the protagonist.

The new spin-off will not be a sequel to Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019), in which Dwayne starred opposite Jason Statham, but rather between the latest film in the series, Fast X (in theatres), and the next film, Fast X Part 2 (US release 2025). The film is said to depict the events that take place. The script will be written by Chris Morgan, who worked with Dwayne on Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.

Posting a video on Instagram, Dwayne said: ‘This is the information everyone has been waiting for. Hobbs is coming back to the Wild Speed series, 100% true”. ‘I’ve built my career on an “audience first” mentality. That’s always been the direction I’ve gone. I want to congratulate the family and Universal for making Fast X a worldwide hit. Hobbs and Seven Bucks Productions are full of energy to take the franchise into new territory that fans around the world will love.

Dwayne, who has played Hobbs since the fifth film in the series, Fast Five (2011), has long been reported to have had a falling out with lead actor and producer Vin Diesel, who was unprofessional on the set of the eighth film, The Fate of the Furious (2017). This was after Dwayne criticised Vin for his behaviour.

Dwayne’s relationship with the other cast members deteriorated when he prioritised Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw over the ninth film in the series, F9, but the disagreement appeared to be temporarily resolved when he later posted a video thanking Vin. However, the disagreement resurfaced when Vinh said during the release of F9 that he “had to give [Hobbs] a love whip [to embody the difficult character of Hobbs]”. Dwayne defiantly stated that he “laughed at that” and declared that he would never return to the series.

However, in the post-credit scene of his latest film, Fast X, Hobbs, played by Dwayne, made a surprise appearance. Dwayne’s surprise return to the series came as a surprise to fans around the world, as the scene teased a full-scale clash with Dante (Jason Momoa), the son of drug lord Reyes, whom Hobbs had finished off in Fast Five.

In a video Dwayne posted, he revealed that the disagreement had been resolved, saying, “Vin and I let bygones be bygones all last summer,” and that “even though we had our differences, me and Vin will always be brothers”. Vin liked an Instagram video uploaded by Dwayne and their relationship appears to have been fully restored.
