U.S. and Canadian authorities search
The submersible started diving toward the seafloor where the wreckage of the Titanic was located, but lost contact after about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
A submersible used for sightseeing tours to search for the wreckage of the British-Australian passenger ship Titanic, which sank after striking an iceberg in 1912, went missing off the southeastern coast of Canada, and U.S. and Canadian authorities began a search on June 19.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the submersible, with a pilot and four passengers on board, began diving on the morning of June 18 toward the seafloor where the wreckage of the Titanic was located, but lost contact after about 1 hour and 45 minutes. 96-hour dives are possible.
The search by ship and plane is being conducted in waters about 1,450 kilometers east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, U.S., and includes the use of sonar capable of surveying to a depth of about 4,000 meters.
Ocean Gate Expeditions, which operates the submarine, said in a statement that it is doing everything possible to rescue the crew. Hamish Harding, a wealthy British man, was also aboard the submarine, his family posted on an exchange website.
According to Ocean Gate, the tour cost $250,000 per person and was scheduled to depart from St. John’s, Newfoundland, in eastern Canada, to search for the wreckage of the Titanic about 640 kilometers underwater at a depth of about 3,800 meters.
