It is said that Spotify executives were “horrified” by a comment Prince Harry made during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Prince Harry and Princess Meghan signed a major $20 million contract with Spotify in December 2020. One royal expert noted that Prince Harry may have “downplayed” the deal in an interview program he appeared on four months later.

In March 2021, Prince Harry appeared on an interview program with Oprah Winfrey, a big-name host, and stated that the agreements he had signed with Spotify and Netflix “were not part of the plan.”

Prince Harry added, “My family [the British royal family] cut me off financially and we had to pay for our own security. It was at that point that someone offered me a contract.” He made a statement that could be taken to mean that the contract was not his intention.

Richard Eden, the Daily Mail’s royal reporter, said that Prince Harry’s comments may have made Spotify executives look bad.

‘It takes an awful lot of work to produce one podcast show. It’s serious work, and it’s a lot of planning,” said Richard Eden, inferring the hard work on the production side, “You can’t just come out of the blue and say, ‘Well, what are we going to do today? It’s not something you can just come out of the blue and say, ‘Well, what are we going to do today?

Eden added, “I had to listen to [Meghan’s] podcast show for work…I wasn’t surprised when I heard it was cancelled.

Rebecca English, another royal reporter, agreed with Eden’s statement. She added that while Prince Harry and his wife may have wanted to create content on a subject of interest to them, the public wanted to hear about the royal family.
