The death toll from the wildfires on Maui was reported to be 80 as of the evening of August 11. It is known that the sirens used to alert residents were not working for some reason at the time of the wildfire, which started on August 8 and is believed to have been fanned by hurricane-force winds and spread rapidly through the city.
