If Apple follows its usual schedule, the new “iPhone” should appear in September. The “iPhone 15” is said to be the first iPhone to support USB Type-C charging.
Online speculation and reports suggest that the “Lightning” port will be discontinued on the iPhone 15, and new information has surfaced that other iPhones will follow suit.
On August 9, “X” (formerly Twitter) user @aaronp613 posted that the beta code for tvOS 17 mentioned six unannounced iPhone models, and on August 12 he posted his own speculation that four of the six were for the iPhone 15 model and the remaining two were for the USB Type -C compatible iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini.
Meanwhile, BGR reports that four of the model numbers are for the iPhone 15 model, but the remaining two are probably for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.
If so, the “iPhone 14 Pro” and “iPhone 14 Pro Max” models are expected to be discontinued after the release of the iPhone 15 series; Apple usually officially discontinues production and sales of the previous series’ “Pro” models after the release of a new iPhone so as not to interfere with sales of those models. production and sales of the previous series “Pro” models to avoid disrupting sales of those models after the release of the new iPhones.
If an iPhone 13 or iPhone 14 model with USB Type-C charging support is offered, it would mark the first time Apple has changed the charging port on an already released product.
Apple is also rumored to be soon announcing an “AirPods Pro” case with a USB-C charging port, suggesting that the company intends to gradually eliminate the Lightning port, which has been a major design feature of its products.
It is possible that consumers may feel uncomfortable about the change in charging ports. Apple’s choice to eliminate the headphone jack remains controversial. However, the elimination of the headphone jack is not expected to have a significant impact on iPhone 7 sales.
