At the time, some of the cast members were “scared” and “embarrassed.

In the “And That’s What You Really Missed” podcast, Kevin McHale (Artie) and Jenna Auschwitz (Tina) share the story behind the “Glee” show. The cast objected to performing a song that was included in one of the episodes, and asked the creator, Ryan Murphy, if he would stop working on the song.

At the time, the cast members were “scared” and “embarrassed,” but the song was performed on the show as planned. However, contrary to the cast’s expectations, the song became one of their (New Directions’) biggest hits.

They confessed that they didn’t want to perform it in episode 16 of season 2, “Aim! The song “Loser Like Me” was performed in episode 16 of Season 2, “The Longed-for First Win. It is the “original song” that New Directions performed at the state competition.

According to Kevin, “Loser Like Me” and “Get It Right” sung by Lea Michele (Rachel) in the same episode were tests to see if they could produce an original song. Indeed, “Glee” had been performing only cover songs by popular artists up to that point. Kevin explained the cast’s reaction at the time: “We didn’t like the song, and everyone was very concerned about it. We didn’t like it, and people were very worried about it,” Kevin said.

After the dance rehearsal, he also had a chance to talk with Ryan. We decided to raise the subject of how we felt about the song,” she said. He kind of nudged us and was like, ‘It’s not up to you guys [to decide]. I didn’t say it in those exact words,” she told Ryan, but it didn’t seem to change the outcome.

Kevin says he now realizes that “Loser Like Me” was the song he needed for that episode. Jenna, on the other hand, remarked, “When Max Martin wrote this song, it makes it more embarrassing that we didn’t like it at first, like this is no good, or that it probably won’t work. She can’t believe that the pop icon who wrote Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” and Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” had difficulty with the song.

Note that “Loser Like Me” debuted at No. 6 on Billboard’s HOT 100 (singles chart).
