The court battle between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard began on April 11 local time in Fairfax, VA. Johnny Depp appeared for the third consecutive day in a defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
On this day, an abusive message about Amber that Johnny once sent to a friend was read.
The trial is over Amber’s contribution to a 2018 Washington Post article in which she spelled out that she was a victim of domestic violence. Although she did not name names in the article, she claimed that it had a significant impact on her career because it implied domestic violence by Johnny. Johnny denied the DV and sued for compensation.
On April 19, Johnny himself appeared in court and on the stand flatly denied the DV allegations, saying that he had never hit a woman; on April 20, he gave a graphic account of a time in the past when he had amputated his fingertips.
Then, on April 21, the third day of court, Amber’s lawyer Benjamin Rottenborn cross-examined her about text messages Johnny had written in the past.
He asked about Johnny’s friendship with English actor Paul Bettany: “Are they friends who do drugs with you?” he asked. Johnny replied, “That’s a strange question,” and admitted that he had been drinking and doing drugs with him.
He then read a text message that Johnny had sent to Paul on June 11, 2013, which read, “Let’s burn Amber! and read a text message that read, “You didn’t stop. The next text read, ‘Let’s drown her before we burn her! ‘” he said.
He added, “I want to apologize to the court and jury in advance for the language I am going to use,” and Johnny wrote with the F-word, “After we burn her, we will make sure she is dead by raping her burned body!” and read out a message that said
Johnny and Amber met on a movie set in 2011 and began living together in 2012; they wed in February 2015 at their Los Angeles home.
Reading from the text, Rottenborn said, “Did I read that correctly? You wrote about the woman who would later become your wife,” and Johnny honestly admitted that he did.
He then also read a message sent after a flight from Boston to Los Angeles in May 2014.
Amber claimed that Johnny was drunk and abusive at this time, but Johnny stated that he fell asleep in the bathroom after drinking a glass of champagne.
In a text message Johnny sent to Paul a week after the flight, he said, “I’m going to stop drinking alcohol. I had been drinking all night before I picked Amber up in LA. It’s awful. I haven’t eaten in days. Half a bottle of whiskey, a thousand Red Bulls, drugs, and two bottles of champagne,” he wrote, followed by the following.
‘Sure, I’m too drunk to lash out at my loved ones for the slightest reason. It’s not something I would do at my age. But drugs are fine.”
When the message was read out, Johnny admitted the truth: “That’s right.
